Reviving the tus collective

Published on by Kevin van Zonneveld

tus has had an Open Collective since January 2025, but we never really put it to work. That changes now.

Transloadit started tus in 2013 and has since invested well over €300,000 in it: maintainer time, the reference implementations, and trips to IETF meetings where resumable uploads are becoming an HTTP standard (draft-ietf-httpbis-resumable-upload). We want that funding to be visible and shared, so that tus no longer depends on a single company.

What we’re adding today comes on top of that: a base sponsorship of $350 a month through GitHub Sponsors, and until April 30, 2027, Transloadit matches every new contribution from others one to one, on Open Collective or GitHub Sponsors, up to €2,400. If your company relies on tus, now is a good moment: your contribution counts double.

What the money pays for

The proceeds will be used to cover expenses, in this order:

  1. Travel to IETF meetings for the people editing and implementing the resumable uploads draft, so it can become an RFC.
  2. Maintenance of tusd, tus-js-client and tus-node-server: reviews, bug and security fixes, releases.
  3. Interoperability work between tus implementations and the new standard.

Every expense is public on the tus Open Collective, and the collective’s admins approve spending. We’ll post an update each quarter on what came in and what it paid for.

What sponsors get

Sponsoring tus first of all keeps a piece of infrastructure you depend on healthy. We also want your support to be visible:

Transloadit sponsors at the Silver level through GitHub Sponsors, on purpose: it’s the route most companies will use, so we want to be the first to go through it.

Contribute

If tus is part of your stack, become a contributor on Open Collective. You can also support tus through GitHub Sponsors; both count toward the match. More about how tus is funded is in the Sponsor tus section on our homepage.

Thank you to everyone who has contributed code, issues and time to tus over the years.
